Dronabinol is a cannabinoid agonist prescribed rarely for nausea and vomiting to patients undergoing chemotherapy. A new study conducted at the University of Illinois, has found that dronabinol fights against sleep apnea successfully. Sleep apnea is a disorder that increases the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

It is known that in case of sleep apnea, the breathing stops and resumes a lot of times during sleep due to blockage of the upper respiratory tract. The study involved people who suffered from sleep apnea. During 6 weeks the volunteers take dronabinol once a day at bedtime, Zee News reports.

The scientists have found that due to high doses of dronabinol (10 mg), the incidence of apnea and hypopnea during sleep has been reduced. The subjective levels of sleepiness have been also reduced in the volunteers. The patient satisfaction degree with treatment was high.
