New method will help to treat Alzheimer's disease

According to UPI.com, scientists from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology have created a compound capable to neutralize the beta-amyloid protein. This protein forms plaques which are typical to Alzheimer's disease.

During the study the scientists have found that beta-amyloid protein toxicity was decreased in hydrolysis (cleavage of a compound under the influence of water) involving TMC crystalline compound. After that the scientists alternately placed cobalt, nickel, zinc and copper in the center of TMC structure.

The scientists have established that when a dual layer of cobalt was in the center of TMC, the hydrolytic activity was the highest. The researchers say that the new compound is able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. In addition, it does not cause a hydrolysis of other proteins.
