A remedy for asthmatics may prevent skin problems

Omalizumab, a drug that is commonly used to treat asthma, can help the people who have itchy blisters on their skin due to cold or rubbing. This was discovered by scientists from Charité University Clinic. The scientists have carried out two clinical studies, Zee News reports.

For three months omalizumab has been used to treat two different groups of patients (61 patients with symptomatic dermographism and 31 volunteers with cold urticaria). People with cold urticaria may have a serious allergic reaction during the bathing. Even slight rubbing can cause severe itching in people with symptomatic dermographism.

The researchers have determined the thresholds of sensitivity to stimuli in patients. The first measurement was performed prior to the drug administration. Then the specialists measured the thresholds several times, including two weeks after the last dose. The scientists have found out that due to omalizumab, the severity of symptoms in both groups has significantly decreased. In addition, the remedy prevented the symptoms in almost 50% of patients, even after stimuli exposure.
