A unique material kills bacteria without antibiotics

A group of scientists from NUST MISiS, has created a new material for medical implants that simplifies recovery from fractures, Remedium reports. The secret is to use platinum and iron nanoparticles. They allow to destroy up to 98% of harmful bacteria, as a result to reduce the risk of postoperative infections.

According to statistics, in 1-4% of cases, a bacterial infection occurs after implant placement. In the case of a complex fracture, the risk of developing an infection increases up to 30%. As a rule, antibiotic therapy is used to deal with this problem. But there are always risks that the infection may become antibiotic resistant or may cause allergic reactions. Sometimes a second operation is required.

The new material with platinum and iron nanoparticles in 8-12 hours destroys 98% of the harmful bacteria around the implant. This material can cope with staphylococcus, E. coli and Klebsiella pneumonia. In addition, the immune system can function normally. No factors affecting lymphocytes were observed. In the near future, full-scale animal tests will be performed.
