A universal flu vaccine is going to be tested in Oxford

Researchers from Oxford University have initiated clinical trials of a flu vaccine that is potentially effective against all types of virus. According to the research plan, more than 2 thousand volunteers will participate in 2 years clinical trials.

The experimental vaccine does not include surface antigens, but more conservative proteins that are not susceptible to high variability. It is noted that the designed drug stimulates the production of T-cells to destroy the virus, but not antibodies. The safety of the drug has been confirmed by the previous stage of clinical trials.

The current influenza vaccines need to be annually adapted to seasonal strains of the virus. However, they often provide an insufficient protection in older patients with a weakened immune system.
