Cancer drugs can prevent heart failure

Some cells, such as blood cells and intestinal epithelial cells are continuously updated throughout life, but cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells) do not have such property. A cicatrization, which can cause

heart failure, occurs due to the inability of the heart to repair itself after a heart attack, Zee News reports.

The scientists of Texas Medical Center developed a cancer drug aimed at Wnt signaling molecule. They are involved in tissue regeneration, but often contribute to cancer development. Porcn enzyme plays an important role in the formation of Wnt proteins. During the enzyme inhibitor testing, the researchers have noticed interesting effects.

The scientists have recorded a number of the expected bones and hair side effects. However, due to the drug, cardiomyocytes became to divide actively. The scientists decided to test their findings. The scientists caused heart attacks in mice and then treated the rodents with Porcn inhibitor. The researchers have found that in these animals the heart worked almost twice as good as compared to the control group of mice which did not receive the drug.
