Fish oil can significantly reduce the risk of diabetes

British scientists have conducted a study that found strong evidence that oily fish or fish oil provides very important metabolic benefits on a regular basis. Based on a prospective study of approximately 400,000 people in the UK, people who regularly eat fatty fish have a fairly well-reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

The results of this study on the relationship between fish consumption and the incidence of type 2 diabetes, show a significant, but weaker, correlation between regular fish oil supplementation and a decrease in the incidence of type 2 diabetes. The study involved over 392,000 adults without type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease at the time of enrollment. The average follow-up period was more than 10 years. During this period 7,262 patients were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. The participants who ate one, two, or more servings of oily fish had 22% lower incidence of type 2 diabetes than those who did not. Similar results were also found for individuals, who regularly took fish oil supplements, but their incidence of type 2 diabetes was 9% lower, and the analysis did not reveal any statistically significant association between consumption of lean fish and the development of type 2 diabetes.
