How medicines fight cancer: Incredible images enlarged 2000 times

Have you ever seen the immune system defeat cancer cells from the inside? Thanks to Eye of Science scientific photo studio from Germany, we can take a close look at this process.

These impressive images show the fight of antigen receptors (CARs) against cancer cells. CAR technology works like this: immune cells (T-lymphocytes) are obtained from the patient’s body. Then such immune cells are reprogrammed to recognize malignant cells, propagated in the laboratory and injected back into the patient's blood. This allows the patient’s immune system to destroy the cancer by itself. Multicolored images were taken by scanning electron microscope (SEM). They were enlarged more than 2,000 times so that cancer cells and CAR T-cells could be seen by the human eye.
