Selenium may protect against diet-related obesity

Selenium is an important trace mineral that has antioxidant properties and therapeutic potential for use in chronic conditions and inflammations.

A new study conducted by American scientists in an animal model has found that the addition of selenium to the diet can protect against obesity and improve metabolism in general. A study from the Orentreich Foundation for the Advancement of Science (OFAS) has found that short-term use of organic and inorganic dietary supplements of selenium sources provides many benefits, such as prevention of obesity caused by poor diet. The study has found that selenium supplements improve metabolism by preventing insulin resistance and lowering blood glucose levels. The selenium-induced leptin decrease has been also established by the scientists (leptin is a hormone that controls food intake and energy expenditure in mammals).
