The new method will save diabetics from loss of vision

Scientists from the United States have found that increased levels of transforming growth factor-? (TGF-?) prevent the development of diabetic retinopathy. This disease is the main cause of blindness in adults. According to UPI.com rats with diabetes were studied by the scientists.

The scientists blocked the increase of TGF-? levels. This resulted in damage to the retinal blood vessels in experimental animals with diabetes. Apparently, TGF-? thus protected the retina of rats. The experts hope that their findings may help to create a medicine for diabetic retinopathy.

By the way, the consumption of fatty fish twice a week may significantly reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy in middle-aged and elderly people with type 2 diabetes. This fact was proved by scientists from Barcelona, who had compared the Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil and a diet designed for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
