The number of cancer survivors is growing

The number of Americans with a history of cancer currently stands at 13.7 million. It is predicted that by 2022 this figure will have risen up to 18 million. The number of cancer survivors is growing.

According to the report of Cancer Treatment and Survivorship Facts and Figures made by the specialists of American Cancer Society the number of cancer survivors is increasing due to population ageing and population growth. Besides, the cancer survival rate improves.  

The most widespread types of men’s cancer are prostate cancer (43%), colorectal cancer (9%) and melanoma (7%). Women cancer survivors had breast cancer (41%), womb cancer (8%), and colorectal cancer (8%).

Over a half of survivors consists of people aged 70 or older, and only 5% are younger than 40. Age median of cancer patients at the moment of cancer diagnosis is equal to 66 year. In the USA over 58 510 people live who had cancer in their childhood and in 2012 nearly 12 060 children will receive this diagnosis. 

The disease of the majority of survivors was detected over 5 years ago, and 15% - 20 or more years ago. 

We want to tell once again to our readers who abuse alcohol, that moderate alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancer recurrence by 30%. By" moderate drinking "means at least three/four servings of alcohol per week and the type of drink does not matter.
